The ‘Topeng monyet’ – or Monkey Show – is a traditional form of
entertainment in Indonesia, however despite its apparent appeal, it is
not without controversy.

Young handlers, some as young as 14, tour the streets of Indonesia’s
capital city with the chained macaque monkeys making up to Rp.30,000
(£1.60) a day.

Recent studies of performing monkeys in Jakarta have found that the
apes carry serious diseases transmissible to humans such as the Simian
Foamy Virus (SFV) and the Herpes B Virus.

Performing monkeys are used in Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Thailand,
Vietnam, China, Japan and Korea.
