A hundred nude PETA activists stripped down to their birthday suits yesterday to raise awareness over the Queens Guards’ bear skin hats.

The protest was called to coincide with the upcoming Queen’s Birthday Parade on Friday which is shown nationally on television and is one the grandest displays by the Guards of whole year.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says that the black bear skin caps are cruel and backward, stating that there are many other synthetic materials that would be just as suitable and high quality.

Looking like Paddington Bear meets Freddy Krueger, the bare bottomed protestors held a ‘die-in’ on a large flight of steps opposite St. Pauls Cathedral, lying on the floor naked with fake blood smeared across them. Some held placards demanding the Ministry of Defence stop the use of bear skin now.

Peta claims that a whole bear is used to make one hat and they go through considerable suffering when shot by hunters.

“I’ll gladly bare my skin if it will help save a bears’”, says PETA member Rebecca Jameson. “As the Queen celebrates her birthday in royal style, many black bears won’t live to see another birthday.”

A MoD statement on the protest read: ”The Ministry of Defence has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to the use of faux fur products in military ceremonial clothing wherever a suitable alternative can be found to real fur.

“We have been engaged with potential suppliers to assess whether the market could deliver an alternative solution to meet the Guards’ requirements but industry is not currently able to produce a suitable material.

“However, we remain open to testing material that industry might offer us to assess whether a synthetic alternative meets the requirements needed for a replacement bearskin hat material”.
