She’s privy to more secrets, love notes, proposals, Valentine’s Day Cards and thank you letters than most other postal workers.

But for Lea Redmond, 29, founder of the World’s Smallest Postal Service, it’s what makes her teeny tiny transcription service so special.

“It all came to me in summer 2008,” she smiles. “And the idea was so hilarious I had no choice but to do it.”

Now 15 months on Lea has transcribed thousands of letters and cards from people wishing to pass on good wishes to their loved ones.

Sat at her super-small desk in San Francisco, Lea hand-crafts each letter on special note-paper smaller than a postage stamp and then dinkily seals it in matching envelope complete with tiny but detailed wax seal on the back.

“I guess writing so small is just a natural born talent,” says Leah.

“I only recently discovered it and didn’t realise that everyone couldn’t write so tiny.”

But if you’re worried Great Grandma’s eyes will struggle to read the words you’ve so lovingly asked Lea to write in her super-small handwriting help is at hand.

Each note comes complete with an equally tiny magnifying glass which means everyone can read their notes.

“I must have written about 3,000 notes and cards since I started,” Lea explains.

“I’m especially busy over Valentine’s Day and had to ask all my family to help while I crafted each letter.”

For Lea the best part of her job is being allowed to share in the most intimate thoughts and sentiments of one person to another.

“One guy in the army who was posted in Afghanistan and really missing his wife asked me to send a series of letters to her, but in the form of a treasure hunt,” Lea remembers.

“One led her to the place they shared their first date, kiss and so on – it was really romantic.”

But it’s not just lovers who use Lea’s service. Mothers, sons,  parents, relations and eve friends all use the smallest postal service.

And recently Lea herself has found herself writing to Postmistress Watson, of the World’s Smallest Post Office in Opechee, Florida.

“What could be nicer than the postmistress of the World’s Smallest Postal Service writing to the postmistress of the World’s Smallest Post Office,” Nanette Watson agrees.

“I receive thousands of letters every week with all kinds of strange requests but Lea’s was one in a million.”
